Seeding The Market For ODF

Monday, 2008-November-10

A strategy that Microsoft has always relied upon to spread the use of newer versions of its office suite software is early adopters sending new format files out to the people they correspond and do business with. I have even found a few Office 2007 files coming to the users I support.

I recommend a similar strategy: send ODF files along with a link to Sun’s ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office. Do this when you correspond with your city hall and your utility company. Post ODF files on your Web site. Now, Textmaker Viewer recommends something similar:

TextMaker Viewer is free and can be freely distributed. So, if you send a document not knowing whether your recipient has installed the respective application, just point him to www.officeviewers.com!

Try it out. Let’s continue to spread openness in our society.
