I was looking at articles about Christmas and Christianity. This one brought out some important points.
God does give us more than we can handle. I think that’s His whole point. He wants to give us more than we can handle because it is in our weakness that His strength is perfect. (2 Corinthians 12:9) And how often do we miss out on the blessing of experiencing God’s strength because we refuse situations that are beyond our own strength?
We always want to be sufficient. We want to be able to do everything we attempt in our own strength. In fact, being challenged can be frightening for us. Learning to trust God for your day-to-day direction is difficult enough, but given the fact that he does not generally turn on the loudspeaker and shake the earth with his message, we often are not even sure we have heard from him.
Imagine a situation in which you were certain that you should be doing some particular thing, but the needed resources never came in. Have you been in that situation yourself? Have you been close to someone else who was going through it? When it happens, you wonder if you are being guided from above or deceived by your own desires. And yet, the message of scripture is clear: our lives are not lived for our own pleasure or advancement, but for God’s own purposes. Therefore, this situation may be exactly what God wants in your life.
I heard of some missionaries to an unreached tribe in the South American jungle. Shortly after the men arrived, the tribe killed them all. Some of their wives then went there, showing love to the very people who had killed their husbands, which caused the tribe’s members to pay attention to the message of love.
Tying this up, if you think you can "do it yourself", that is a good sign that you are headed for trouble. If you want to do the will of God, you need live in dependence upon him.
