More OOo Use And Deployment

Thursday, 2007-January-11 at 12:04

SolidOffice has a story about the recent deployment of OpenOffice.org (OOo) in Malaysia as part of their open source in the public sector initiative.  He (Benjamin Horst of SolidOffice) also has the story of a US Dept. of Education-sponsored tutorial that features OOo alongside Microsoft’s office suite.

If I may make a prediction, I’d say that the spread of virtualization will lead to more Free / Open Source Software (FOSS) use inside of virtualized environments.  After all, who wants to pay for multiple licenses to run the same operating system on the same hardware?  As the pointy-haired bosses see that the IT group can do more without paying as much, they will listen when the IT chief / CIO wants to replace some of their proprietary software-powered servers with FOSS-powered servers.  It is already happening in the rest of the world, so I expect to see it coming here as well.

Thanks to mentions on SolidOffice and Grokdoc plus Rob Weir's blogroll, traffic here has surged by more than 30% in the last week.  Thank you.  I'll keep plugging away, spreading knowledge and information, trying to help make all of our lives better.
