Vista May Be Fading Fast

Via James Robertson: Microsoft is extending the sales period for Windows XP because so many people are unhappy with Windows Vista.

The last time a Microsoft operating system got this kind of reception, it was Windows Millenium Edition (WinMe). At that time, users either waited a year or so and bought Windows XP (WinXP) or they installed Windows 98 in the place of WinMe.

Take a look. Given its reception, Vista may be withdrawn from the market in a year or so. This is speculation; I have no secret source in Redmond. Still, I would not be surprised to find that Vista is replaced with “XP2” late next year.

In other news, a man won a suit against Acer over preinstalled software (including Windows XP). A European think tank is recommending that operating system and software purchases be unbundled from computer hardware purchases.

If you are looking to buy a new computer, here’s what I recommend: Dell plus Ubuntu. More stable, more reliable, more usable. What more could you want?
