iWork Still Lacks ODF Support

Even though Microsoft Office 2007 is set to get built-in ODF support later this year, Apple’s iWork suite continues to lag behind in this area. While this year’s Macworld includes some announcements about the suite, support for the OpenDocument Format open standard file formats was not among them. This is not the first time Apple has disappointed in that regard.

We await Apple’s decision to join their attractive-looking product to the modern, interconnected world, a world where software users are not tied to a limited set of proprietary (or ‘proprietary-in-drag’) formats, but instead, have access to open data formats that promote maximum interoperability as well as interchangeability. Surely, a company that devotes so much attention to ease of use is not afraid that its products will not be able to compete with OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice.

No ODF support, no sale. Guess I’ll continue to recommend NeoOffice instead of iWork.

Very disappointing of Apple not to move forward in this area. I can only speculate that some contract agreement with Microsoft forbids them from supporting ODF – Microsoft has a looooong history of pushing for things like that in their business dealings.
